Almost Successful? Get Out Of Your Way! – 5 Tips To Get Out Of Your Own Way

Is your ego getting in the way of your success? I have had the unnecessary experience of missing or messing up opportunities over the years for several reasons, including ego. So that you can realize success faster, take a look at the following ways you can get out of your own way.

1. Let go of your misfortune from the past. One let down should not give you cold feet. Let go of the pain and forgive those who took advantage of you. Let the past die and be optimistic about future opportunities. Pain can be a good teacher and from a perspective it can help to protect us. However, you must continue to go forward. Do your homework to protect yourself. Ask questions and do thorough investigations, back ground checks, etc. Anger may be blinding you from your next opportunity. A friend was burned by a real estate deal a few years back. He is still recovering, but he has my admiration because he recently decided to go and try again.

2. Be honest with yourself about your current status. This can be a challenge, but in my experience the best person to bring you out of crisis is you. You are the most familiar with your situation, however if you ignore what’s really going on, you make it difficult to solve problems. Don’t be too proud too seek help. You don’t have to own a large company to have a human resources department. Utilize the talent you have available to you.

3. Look past the victories and pride of the past. Past victories may be an albatross around your neck. Believe it or not, holding on to the victory you accomplished years ago is great, but the way you accomplished your victories may need to be adjusted or thrown out. I learned this the hard way with flipping houses. I flipped a house in 2005 in 7 days, with a line of people waiting to throw money at it. Fast forward to 2009, it took me 5 months to realize I couldn’t flip houses the same way. Hello recession!

4. Open your mind to new ideas. No one holds the patent on every great idea. As sure as there is a hot idea today, there will be something else better shortly. You may not want to totally abandon your ideas, but open yourself up to what else is working. You may find an awesome compliment to your current strategy. You may find that social media provides an excellent way for you to build rapport with your customers, rather than the typical marketing promotions. Let go of your pride. If someone has a great idea, but your not 100% about being involved, calibrate your input. Test it out and see if it works. This way you minimize your risk.

5. Find people who have been where you want to go. Make sure this is not someone who boast about theories. Contact only individuals who have proven success. Request to meet them for coffee or treat them lunch in an effort gain their knowledge. Every time I have done this, everyone has been willing to share. Real Estate, Event Logistics, Speaker Mentors, every last one of them said yes. These men and women have saved me time, money and have made me successful in the areas above. I should have called Jordan for basketball strategy, but his cell phone was disconnected. For that reason I am terrible at basketball.
